The SportsXchange Player Notes: HOT NEWS
Sep 7 2010 - T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Ravens)
WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh said it was "refreshing" to be in Baltimore, although he declined to get into specifics about why he was released by Seattle.
"Me not being there, I can promise you had nothing to do with football," Houshmandzadeh said. "Nobody on that team beat me out. If they're honest with themselves, they know that. If you watch practice, it's obvious. For whatever reason, they did what they did. I'm not going to get to throwing rocks because I just don't want to."
With the Ravens, he'll be the third receiver behind Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason.

Sep 7 2010 - Reggie Bush (Saints)
RB Reggie Bush will be stripped of his Heisman Trophy from 2005, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports.
Bush was ruled ineligble to play that season by the NCAA due to money and housing provided to his family while at USC. The report said the Heisman Trophy Trust is close to finishing its own investigation, and that the award will be left vacant if stripped from Bush. Former University of Texas quarterback and current Tennessee Titan Vince Young finished second to Bush in the voting.

Sep 7 2010 - Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers)
QB Ben Roethlisberger will be eligible to return after the Steelers' first four games, but he won't be a team captain, and he might not be the Steelers' starting quarterback.
A day after Roethlisberger wasn't voted as a captain by his teammates, coach Mike Tomlin wouldn't guarantee that he'll be the starter when he returns from suspension. Dennis Dixon will start the regular-season opener.
"I'm going to dodge that one and not artfully," Tomlin told Sirius NFL Radio about Roethlisberger's status as the starter. "I'm not going to back myself in (a) corner."

Sep 7 2010 - Josh Freeman (Buccaneers)
QB Josh Freeman took snaps and threw the football in practice Tuesday and will play against the Browns Sunday. Freeman said he may wear a small splint on the outside of his broken thumb in Sunday's game.

Sep 7 2010 - C.J. Spiller (Bills)
RB C.J. Spiller is expected to start the regular-season opener, according to a report by NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.
Fred Jackson (left hand) and Marshawn Lynch (ankle) have been bothered by injuries and their status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

Sep 7 2010 - Donovan McNabb (Redskins)
QB Donovan McNabb's sprained ankle isn't 100 percent, but he told ESPN980 that he will start against Dallas on Sunday. McNabb returned to practice Monday for the first time since injuring his ankle in the second preseason game.

Sep 7 2010 - Albert Haynesworth (Redskins)
DT Albert Haynesworth could be headed back to Tennessee, with ESPN's Chris Mortensen reporting the Redskins have been in contact with Haynesworth's former team regarding a potential trade.
Haynesworth, who played 49 of 55 snaps in the Sept. 2 preseason finale at Arizona, took some work with the first team during Monday's practice.
However, there's been no indication that the two-time All-Pro is going to start ahead of either nose tackle Ma'ake Kemoeatu or right end Kedric Golston in Sunday's season opener against Dallas.
"Any time a person plays the defensive end position, the nose position, it takes some time," coach Mke Shanahan said Monday, adamantly refusing to reveal his starters. "It doesn't happen overnight. I thought he did a good job considering how many plays he did (play) at a couple of different positions. It was work that was well-needed and he played hard. He worked hard and made a few mistakes, but he's getting better. He's in much better shape than he was before. We'll play the best players who are ready to play."
Haynesworth, whom the Redskins paid a $21 million bonus in April as part of the record seven-year, $100 million contract they gave him in February 2009, fell behind his defensive line mates by blowing off the offseason conditioning program and mandatory minicamp at Redskins Park. He failed Shanahan's conditioning test three times upon his return for training camp before finally rejoining his teammates on the field on the 10th day of camp.

Sep 7 2010 - Tom Brady (Patriots)
QB Tom Brady continues negotiations with the Patriots amid conflicting reports about the progress. The Boston Herald cited sources that said the sides were close on a three-year, $58 million deal, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reported sources close to the situation said reports of a deal being done are "wrong" and "inaccurate." Brady is due to earn $6 million in 2010, the final year of his contract.

Sep 7 2010 - Albert Haynesworth (Redskins)
DT Albert Haynesworth could be on the move. A broadcast report linked the Redskins' disgruntled defensive lineman to his old team, the Titans, who apparently were contacted over the weekend about a possible deal for Haynesworth.

Sep 6 2010 - Julius Jones (Seahawks)
RB Julius Jones got an apology from general manager John Schneider for a leak to media that he would be released -- even though he was not. The 29-year-old runner was reportedly released by the Seahawks, but was on the practice field on Monday. Due to make $2.5 million in base salary this season, Jones reportedly took a pay cut to remain on the team.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll named Justin Forsett the starter for this week.
General manager John Schneider told reporters he apologized to Jones for the erroneous report leaked out to the media, which Jones said he appreciated.
"My weekend went business as usual, just like practice went business as usual today," Jones said. "So everything you guys heard was false, man. I got a lot of phone calls and a lot o text messages, but I'm still here"

Sep 6 2010 - Sergio Kindle (Ravens)
LB Sergio Kindle, the Ravens' top draft pick in the 2010 draft, is headed to Baltimore to undergo medical tests by the team, the rookie said on his Twitter account.
The second-round pick fractured his skull a few days before the start of training camp in late July. Kindle is expected to start the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list, which will sideline him for at least the first six weeks of the season.

Sep 6 2010 - Donovan McNabb (Redskins)
QB Donovan McNabb returned to practice on Monday for the first time since spraining his left ankle on Aug. 21 against Baltimore.

Sep 6 2010 - Tony Richardson (Jets)
FB Tony Richardson re-signed with the Jets a day after being released, coach Rex Ryan said.

Sep 6 2010 - Donovan McNabb (Redskins)
QB Donovan McNabb practiced Monday for the first time since spraining his left ankle in the second preseason game. Coach Mike Shanahan said on his coach's show that he's optimistic McNabb will be ready for the regular-season opener, and took part in at least the early portion of practice.

Sep 6 2010 - Vincent Jackson (Chargers)
WR Vincent Jackson agreed to terms on a contract with an unnamed team, but his agents told the San Diego Union-Tribune that a potential trade fell through because the Chargers demanded too much.
"We have no idea what the Chargers were asking for in return," Neil Schwartz, the partner for agent Jonathan Feinsod, said. "From what they told us, they and the Chargers could not work out the trade."
Jackson has reportedly been seeking a five-year deal worth $50 million, including $30 million guaranteed, and Seattle is the one known team San Diego gave permission to speak to Jackson. However, the Seahawks reportedly balked at his contract demands.
Jackson faces a league-imposed three-game suspension, and by not reporting by Sept. 4, he will miss an additional three games because the Chargers placed him on the Roster Exempt List when he didn't report by Aug. 20. However, the NFL Players Association may be able to get him off the roster exempt list.

Sep 6 2010 - Sean Locklear (Seahawks)
OT Sean Locklear will be released if the Seahawks are unable to trade him, according to ESPN's John Clayton. Locklear has been the starter on the right side, and was expected to move to the left side with rookie Russell Okung recovering from a high ankle sprain. But the Seahawks acquired Stacy Andrews from Philadelphia and veteran Chester Pitts is working his way back into football shape. Former Bronco Tyler Polumbus was also acquired in August, and is currently listed as Locklear's backup on the right side.

Sep 6 2010 - Maurice Jones-Drew (Jaguars)
RB Maurice Jones-Drew returned to practice Monday. "MJD" had just six preseason carries as he dealt with a lateral meniscus injury.

Sep 6 2010 - Josh Freeman (Buccaneers)
QB Josh Freeman, who sat out the final two preseason games with a fractured finger on his throwing hand, was able to practice without a glove Monday.

Sep 6 2010 - Dennis Dixon (Steelers)
QB Dennis Dixon was named the Steelers' starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Falcons. Coach Mike Tomlin said Dixon's performance in preseason games convinced him he was ready. Dixon earned the nod over Charlie Batch.

Sep 6 2010 - Dennis Dixon (Steelers)
QB Dennis Dixon will start the Steelers' regular-season opener, coach Mike Tomlin said after Monday's practice. Dixon got the nod over veteran Charlie Batch in large part due to his mobility. Pittsburgh has struggled with pass protection in recent years. Dixon also enjoyed a strong preseason, while Batch was on the verge of being released until Byron Leftwich, the projected starter with Ben Roethlisberger suspended for the first four games, suffered a knee injury.
"Dennis has had a very productive preseason and training camp," Tomlin said. "He went into the training camp as a young guy, second in the pecking order behind Byron Leftwich. He did a nice job and made it extremely competitive. He waged a battle and got some first-team reps in some preseason games. Largely, we've been very impressed with how he's handled himself in game situations."

Sep 6 2010 - Larry Fitzgerald (Cardinals)
WR Larry Fitzgerald ran routes against defenders Monday for first time in three weeks. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Fitzgerald looked good but it was obvious his conditioning needs work. Fitzgerald suffered a sprained MCL in the first preseason game.

Sep 6 2010 - Ed Reed (Ravens)
FS Ed Reed will begin the season on the PUP list, forcing him to miss at least the first six weeks, and said he still has "some weakness." following May surgery to fix a torn labrum.
"I probably could have went out there and kinda maneuvered my way around for a couple of weeks until I really got myself back together but I didn't know if that was going to be fourth, fifth week or whatnot," Reed told Sirius XM radio.
"And it wasn't gonna do any justice to the team after they put in all that hard work this offseason and training camp for that one guy who we probably needed on the roster that was probably 110 percent and could have gave us a special teams play or maybe even a defensive play here or there."
Tom Zbikowski, a third-year player, will start until Reed returns. Reed would be forced to six out at least the first six weeks if placed on PUP.

Sep 6 2010 - Darrelle Revis (Jets)
CB Darrelle Revis has signed a contract extension with the Jets, reportedly four years for $46 million that includes $32 million guaranteed, according to the Daily News.
The deal is considered a temporary solution to get Revis back to the team while the sides can continue to discuss a longer-term deal.
"This is an intermediate step to what we hope is an entire career of Darrelle as a Jet, for him to retire a Jet, for him to hopefully go to the Hall of Fame one day as a Jet and for him to be in our ring of honor," GM Mike Tannenbaum said is a conference call with reporters. "I think that was an important step in the process, but there was still obviously more work to be done," Tannenbaum said. "We spent all day looking at it and probably about (11 p.m. EST Sunday), we made a very significant breakthrough to finding a landing spot that was good for both sides."
Revis is expected to fly to New York and practice with the team in order to be on the field for next Monday's game against the Ravens.
On his Twitter account, Revis posted this thank you to family and agents Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod: "To my family, neil, & john I love u guys I'm comin home baby!!!" Revis wrote. "Revis Island LET'S GO."

Sep 6 2010 - Danny Clark (Saints)
LB Danny Clark, released by Houston, has signed with New Orleans, which has been dealing with injuries at linebacker. MLB Jonathan Vilma has a knee issue, and WLB Jonathan Casillas was placed on injured reserve. Clark, 33, is in his 11th season.

Sep 6 2010 - Jake Long (Dolphins)
LT Jake Long's status for the regular-season opener is uncertain as he was wearing a brace on his left knee Monday and didn't participate in the early portion of practice. Coach Tony Sparano has declined to comment on his status.
