The SportsXchange Player Notes: LEVEL 2 NEWS |
Feb 1 2010 - Joey Porter (Dolphins) OLB Joey Porter isn't expected to return to the Dolphins next season, and said he would prefer to be traded rather than accept a rotational role. "I don't get paid like a rotation guy," Porter said on the Jim Rome Show on Monday. "So I'm not ready to take that role. I'm still a starter. I can honestly say I won't come back to do that. Why keep a guy there that you want to make a role player?"
Jan 27 2010 - Mike McKenzie (Free Agent) CB Mike McKenzie, the former Saint who was re-signed in late November and released again in January, had a tryout with the Colts on Wednesday.
Jan 17 2010 - LaDainian Tomlinson (Chargers) RB LaDainian Tomlinson, held to 24 yards on 12 carries in the playoff loss to the Jets, didn't sound confident about returning to the Chargers next season. He still wants to play, but it's doubtful it will be in San Diego.
Jan 13 2010 - Braylon Edwards (Jets) WR Braylon Edwards returned to practice one day after pleading no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct in Cleveland and being placed on probation. Edwards was fined $1,000 and given a suspended 180-day jail sentence. His probation will be inactive, so he won't have to report to a probation officer.
Jan 12 2010 - Steve Weatherford (Jets) P Steve Weatherford missed the wild-card playoff game because of an irregular heartbeat, but has been cleared to play at San Diego.
Jan 9 2010 - Peyton Manning (Colts) QB Peyton Manning has won his record fourth The Associated Press MVP award. He received 39 1/2 first-place votes, well ahead of second-place finisher Drew Brees (7 1/2). Manning had been tied with Brett Favre with three MVP's apiece. Manning also won the award in 2003, 2004 and 2008. "I've been the beneficiary of having the same owner, the same team president all four times," Manning told AP. "I've received great coaching from our head coaches and assistants and a number of different teammates who have all had a huge impact on me."
Jan 7 2010 - Chris Gocong (Eagles) LB Chris Gocong, who was benched three games ago, may replace Moise Fokou at strong-side linebacker Saturday. At the very least, they both will get snaps. Gocong hasn't played a down on defense since his benching.
Jan 6 2010 - Bobby McCray (Saints) LDE Bobby McCray will likely start in place of Charles Grant, who has been put on injured reserve with a triceps injury, in the divisional playoff game on Jan. 16.
Jan 4 2010 - Julian Edelman (Patriots) WR Julian Edelman set a career high in receptions with 10 for 103 yards, besting the eight receptions for 98 yards he had against the Jets on Sept. 20. The Patriots will be counting on more of the same from him in the postseason with WR Wes Welker out due to a knee injury.
Jan 4 2010 - Derrick Johnson (Chiefs) LB Derrick Johnson returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns against the Broncos in the season finale, going 45 and 60 yards for scores in a big Chiefs victory. As much fun and as exciting as that moment was, Johnson made it plain that his part-time status with the Chiefs defense is not something he wants to continue. "I want to play," Johnson said. "I never dreamed of playing this role. But at the same time, you have to make the most of what you have."
Jan 4 2010 - Fred Jackson (Bills) RB Fred Jackson became the first player in NFL history to gain at least 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards on kickoff returns in the same season. Jackson also enjoyed the fourth-most productive season in NFL history in terms of all-purpose yards with 2,516 -- 1,062 rushing, 371 receiving, 69 on punt returns and 1,014 on kickoff returns. "That's something I'll be able to tell my grandkids about," said the Division III product who is one of the true feel-good success stories in the NFL. Jackson became the 11th Buffalo back to top 1,000 yards in a season.
Jackson rushed for 212 yards Sunday, the seventh-best single-game total in team history.
Jan 2 2010 - Mike McKenzie (Free Agent) CB Mike McKenzie's comeback with the Saints ended when he was released by the team Saturday.
Dec 31 2009 - Mason Crosby (Packers) K Mason Crosby's two field goals in the Sunday rout of the Seattle Seahawks came in handy, not only for restoring the team's confidence in him after he had missed a field-goal try in each of the previous four games but also for etching his name in the league record book. Crosby has 390 career points, topping the 388 by the New England Patriots' Stephen Gostkowski from 2006 to '08 for most points scored by a player in his first three seasons.
Dec 31 2009 - Roy Williams (Cowboys) WR Roy Williams said last week's game was a wakeup call for him -- he had two drops in the first half and didn't see the ball again. He believes his disappointing season has gotten to the point where quarterback Tony Romo and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett have lost trust in him. Some snaps are being given to rookie Kevin Ogletree, and Williams said if he doesn't play better, he could very well lose his job. However, Romo and owner/GM Jerry Jones both denied losing confidence in Williams.
Dec 31 2009 - David Garrard (Jaguars) QB David Garrard is down for a $7.975 million salary next year. Since there won't be a salary cap next year, the Jaguars can pay it if they want to, but there's always a chance they'd ask him to take a pay cut. Garrard said "no comment" when he was asked how he'd react if the Jaguars made that request. Because Garrard is 12-19 since getting a $60 million contract extension after the 2007 season, the Jaguars are likely to be looking at alternatives next year.
Dec 31 2009 - Anquan Boldin (Cardinals) WR Anquan Boldin needs 14 yards to reach 1,000 yards receiving for the fifth time in his seven NFL seasons.
Dec 30 2009 - Daunte Culpepper (Lions) QB Daunte Culpepper said he hadn't been told who would start at quarterback on Sunday. Then he said reporters needed to ask coach Jim Schwartz. But the fact that he spoke to reporters at all spoke volumes, as did this comment: "I'm glad that I've got this opportunity to try to win a game this week." Finally, Drew Stanton showed up on the injury report as limited by an ankle problem. So while rookie Matthew Stafford recovers from knee surgery and nurses a shoulder injury, all signs point to Culpepper getting one last shot in Detroit to show the NFL he's still a starting quarterback. The Lions have never won with Culpepper on the field as a starter. They went 0-9 against him while he was with the Vikings; they have gone 0-9 with him over the past two seasons. Culpepper went 0-5 last year after coming out of semi-retirement. He has gone 0-4 this year while Stafford has been out with injuries. The offense has generated only three points over his last three starts, and he was benched at halftime Dec. 20 against Arizona.
But apparently he is a better option than Drew Stanton, who was a fan favorite in Detroit -- at least until Sunday. Stanton grew up in suburban Detroit, played at Michigan State and was drafted in the second round in 2007. Fans have been waiting to see what he can do.
Then he got his first start Sunday at San Francisco. He threw three bad interceptions, lost a fumble and got benched in the fourth quarter. Apparently he suffered an ankle injury, too.
Culpepper retired last year after he couldn't find a starting job in the NFL. He signed with the Lions because they gave him a chance to start. Then he lost the starting job to Stafford this year even though he lost more than 30 pounds and reunited with Scott Linehan, his offensive coordinator in his glory days with the Vikings. But he hasn't lost his swagger. "I know the player that I am, I feel like I'm a starter," Culpepper said. "I know I'm a starter."
Culpepper, who turns 33 next month, is on the last
Dec 29 2009 - Steven Hauschka (Falcons) K Steve Hauschka, cut by the Ravens in mid-November, was signed by the Falcons. He could wind up kicking in the season finale if Matt Bryant can't go due to a hamstring injury. Hauschka was 9-for-13 on field-goal tries with Baltimore this year, but he missed four of his last seven.
Dec 29 2009 - Devin Aromashodu (Bears) WR Devin Aromashodu, who caught just two passes in the first 12 games and was inactive for six of them, had seven catches for 150 yards and the game-winning 39-yard TD grab in overtime.
Dec 28 2009 - Wes Welker (Patriots) WR Wes Welker broke his own record for most receptions in a season on a 3-yard completion in the second quarter to surpass the 112 receptions he had in 2007. He finished the game with 13 to give him 122 receptions for the year.
Welker also had his seventh 10-plus reception game of the 2009 season to tie the NFL record for a single season. Houston's Andre Johnson of the had seven 10-plus reception games in 2008.
Dec 28 2009 - Adrian Wilson (Cardinals) SS Adrian Wilson became the 10th player in NFL history to record 20 sacks and 20 interceptions in his career. After getting a sack on Sunday against the Rams, Wilson was congratulated at his locker by Cardinals great Larry Wilson, a Hall of Fame safety. "It meant a lot to me," Adrian Wilson said, "to know that he was the guy who invented the safety blitz and revolutionized the game. You have to be appreciative of the people who came before and laid those bricks down."
Dec 28 2009 - Roddy White (Falcons) WR Roddy White became just the second Falcons receive to eclipse the 1,000-yard receiving mark for three seasons in a row, joining Andre Rison. He needed just 52 yards against the Bills. He got 42 of them out of the way of the Falcons' first play from scrimmage, when he scored on a bomb from Matt Ryan. On his second catch, an 18-yarder, White surpassed the 1,000-yard mark. White, who went to his first Pro Bowl last season, finished with eight catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns against the Bills.
Dec 26 2009 - Albert Haynesworth (Redskins) DT Albert Haynesworth ripped the Redskins' defensive scheme and coordinator Greg Blache a day after being sent home by the coaching staff for discliplinary reasons. "If they keep this system the way it is, then they would label Albert Haynesworth a bust who didn't live up to the contract," Haynesworth told the Washington Post in a telephone interview. "Everybody would say he just took the money and ran off. And I'm still playing as hard as I possibly can. But you can only do so much within the system that's put around you."
Dec 24 2009 - Moise Fokou (Eagles) LB Moise Fokou is expected to start at strong-side linebacker Sunday against the Broncos. The rookie will replace struggling Chris Gocong, who has been benched.
Dec 23 2009 - Ricky Schmitt (49ers) K Ricky Schmitt was signed to take over kicking duties for veteran Joe Nedney, who sustained a hamstring Sunday at Philadelphia on a kickoff. Schmitt, who was in 49ers training camp in 2008, has worked out 15 times this season for NFL teams. Teams that are preparing to face a left-footed punter have regularly brought him in to supply practice for the punt returner.
