 PLAYER NOTES:

Aug 29 2010 - DE Julius Peppers' pass-rush prowess is common knowledge. He's hit double figures in sacks in six of his eight NFL seasons. But Peppers demonstrated his dominance against the run in last week's game when he had 2 huge tackles near the line of scrimmage with the Raiders inside the Bears' five-yard line. "He's about as complete of a defensive end as you'll see," coach Lovie Smith said. "A 300-pound man with DB-type speed, plays with leverage, plays the run, plays the pass, all situations. We have a lot of things in store as far as what we're going to do with him this year. He plays as hard as anyone, pursues ... should I stop? We could keep going for a while. "He's a scholarship player that we're going to keep around here for a while."

Aug 8 2010 - DE Julius Peppers is difficult to block, but Bears offensive left tackle Chris Williams knows it better than anyone, considering he has to battle the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end every day in practice. "He's so tough to block because he's as quick as any guy we've got, but he's (almost) 300 pounds," said the 6-foot-6, 315-pound Williams. "His arms are long and, I mean, he's kind of a mutant. Every play he's got something different and he does a good job of feeding off of me, so if I make a mistake, he's going to take (advantage of) it, and that's what the good ones do."

Jul 22 2010 - DE Julius Peppers may play exclusively on one side or the other, or he may go back and forth, seeking mismatches that will force opponents to double-team him. But however he's used, Peppers is expected to give the Bears a pass-rushing presence on the edge they haven't seen since franchise sack leader Richard Dent was in his heyday. And Peppers is already providing a presence in the locker room. "He has done everything we've asked him to do," coach Lovie Smith said. "It's hard sometimes for a guy to move into a leadership role that quick. But that's exactly what he's done. We can't wait to take this next step with him. We have a lot of things in store for him that we haven't done in the past when you have a special player like that. He's bought in completely, and I think the Chicago Bears fans will love what they're going to see from him."

Jun 24 2010 - DE Julius Peppers cost the Bears a small fortune in free agency, but no one is asking for a rebate. Peppers has shown the freakish athleticism and stepped up as a leader. He almost immediately took the leadership role and has impressed teammates and coaches with his work ethic, which has been questioned in the past. "He has done everything we've asked him to do," coach Lovie Smith said. "It's hard sometimes for a guy to move into a leadership role that quickly. But that's exactly what he's done. We can't wait to take this next step with him. He is really excited about being a Chicago Bear." Smith believes that Peppers' pass-rush ability and his propensity for demanding double-team attention will enable the defense to do things it hasn't been able to the past couple years when it lacked a true impact player, a player that the opposing offense has to account for on every play.

Mar 18 2010 - DE Julius Peppers will continue to wear No. 90 in 2010, the same number he wore for eight years with the Carolina Panthers before he left via free agency to join the Bears last Friday.Third-round defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert wore No. 90 last season as a rookie, but no new number has been announced for him. When Peppers visited Halas Hall last Friday, he was asked how much he would pay to have Gilbert relinquish the number. "Hopefully he'll give it up out of respect," Peppers said, laughing. No word yet on how much, if any, money was exchanged for the switch. Peppers' six-year deal with the Bears could pay him as much as $91.5 million if he hits every incentive.

 INJURY REPORT:

Dec 2 2009 - DE Julius Peppers appears over a broken hand and is back to playing more on defense. Peppers was limited for two weeks to playing on pass rush downs, but now is back to playing on base defense.

Dec 1 2009 - DE Julius Peppers finally returned to playing on the base defense last week after spending two games as solely a pass rusher because of a "messed-up hand." Peppers wouldn't say whether or not he broke the hand, but teammate Jon Beason let it slip a couple of weeks ago that Peppers had broken the hand.

Nov 29 2009 - DE Julius Peppers saw an increased role on defense Sunday, returning to play in the team's base set after being relegated to mostly obvious pass rush situations the two previous games because of a so-called "messed-up hand." "It's getting better," said Peppers, who wouldn't discuss whether or not he broke a bone in his hand. Peppers finished with four tackles, two quarterback hurries and shared a sack with Tyler Brayton. He also forced a fumble, his fifth of the season tying a career high.

Nov 24 2009 - DE Julius Peppers is playing with a broken hand and has been limited to pass rush situations the last two weeks. When Peppers plays well the Panthers normally win. When he doesn't they normally lose.

Nov 22 2009 - DE Julius Peppers has been limited to pass rushing situations the last two weeks while playing with a broken hand.
