PLAYER NOTES:
Jun 3 2010 - OLB Joey Porter, a free-agent signing, is expected to add leadership to the defensive side of the ball. But Porter is taking his time in taking on that role. He's cognizant of his short tenure with the team, and wants to learn the scheme and earn the trust of his teammates before voicing too many opinions. For now, Porter is content to just learn the defense and how he fits into it. At 33, Porter could be on the decline, but the Cardinals need him to be an elite edge rusher again. One of the defense's weaknesses last season was the lack of an edge pass rusher who could be single blocks. Porter said he has always kept himself in great shape, and he's confident he can fill that role.
Entering his 12th season in the league, Porter has the credibility to make suggestions to coaches. But he's going to be judicious in doing that, too. If he makes a suggestion, he said, the motivation will be to help the team, not just improve his individual situation.
"I don't really try to just go off something that's just going to help me," he said. "This is about helping everybody. If there's a way we can do it easier as a team, I will voice my opinion, but the foundation of how they run a defense is already here. I'm just a piece of the puzzle.
"I think Billy Davis (defensive coordinator) does a good job. I'm just trying to make sure I know what he wants me to do."
Apr 1 2010 - LB Joey Porter think he has something left at age 33. The Cardinals must agree, having signed him to a three-year, $17.5 million deal. If Porter doesn't play well, the club will be able to bail out of the contract after a year without much of a financial penalty. But the Cardinals are counting heavily on Porter to have a positive impact both on the field and in the locker room.
Mar 31 2010 - OLB Joey Porter will not face charges following his March 27 arrest on suspicion of drunk driving in Bakersfield, Calif., according to multiple reports. The district attorney's office said it will not file charges. "Based upon the information that was provided to us by the CHP, we did not believe that there would be a reasonable likelihood that a jury would find Mr. Porter guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of the allegations. With this belief, we thought it was not appropriate for us to proceed," Supervising Deputy District Attorney Mark Pafford said. The team's website provided details of Porter's contract Wednesday, which reportedly includes base salaries of $1.25 million this year and $5.75 million in 2011 and 2012. The three-year deal is reportedly worth up to $17.5 million if he plays it out.
Mar 29 2010 - OLB Joey Porter, 33, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Bakersfield, Calif., early Saturday, the team confirmed. Porter and a passenger were arrested after Porter was pulled over in a fast-food parking lot, according to the Associated Press.
Mar 20 2010 - OLB Joey Porter agreed to a three-year deal with the Cardinals worth $17.5 million, according to ESPN. Porter was released by Miami earlier this month, and is a good fit for a Cardinals team in need of an increased outside pass rush. "It is exciting on many levels," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "Two areas that come to mind are his productivity on the field, (because) getting 26.5 sacks over the last two years is pretty impressive, especially considering last year with not even playing a full season.
"Also the mentality he brings, it's something we have made great progress with as a team. Having another veteran player, who has had great success in this league, to contribute to that will only help us in an area defensively where we want to improve." Porter will take over for Chike Okeafor, a free agent Arizona won't attempt to re-sign.
Jan 6 2010 - LB Joey Porter will certainly get his ailing knee scoped at the very least this offseason, but don't bet on him returning to the Dolphins. Porter's price tag and roster bonus outweigh his bravado.
Dec 17 2009 - OLB Joey Porter, who has been nursing a right knee injury for most of the season, practiced on a limited basis.
Dec 11 2009 - LB Joey Porter (sore right knee) practiced Friday and is probable to face Jacksonville.
Dec 10 2009 - OLB Joey Porter (knee) remained out of practice Thursday. He was able to ride a stationary bike.
Dec 9 2009 - OLBs Joey Porter (knee)
and Jason Taylor (shoulder) did not practice Wednesday, which could open the door for OLB Cameron Wake, whose last-play hit on Tom Brady led to Channing Crowder's first career interception, The Dolphins have been looking for more ways to get Wake into the lineup, especially on obvious passing downs, while Taylor has managed just a half sack (at Buffalo) over the past six games.
