PLAYER NOTES:
Sep 7 2010 - QB Ben Roethlisberger will be eligible to return after the Steelers' first four games, but he won't be a team captain, and he might not be the Steelers' starting quarterback.
A day after Roethlisberger wasn't voted as a captain by his teammates, coach Mike Tomlin wouldn't guarantee that he'll be the starter when he returns from suspension. Dennis Dixon will start the regular-season opener.
"I'm going to dodge that one and not artfully," Tomlin told Sirius NFL Radio about Roethlisberger's status as the starter. "I'm not going to back myself in (a) corner."
Sep 3 2010 - QB Ben Roethlisberger's suspension was reduced from six games to four on Friday. He met with commissioner Roger Goodell and a group of league administrators who gauged his progress in the plan laid out by Goodell in their previous meeting.
Roethlisberger was suspended for off-field conduct after he was accused for a second time in three years of sexual assault after an incident in Georgia.
The Steelers will be anxious to get Roethlisberger back in action. Byron Leftwich, the likely starter in Roethlisberger's absence, learned Friday he won't be available because of a torn MCL in his left knee suffered in Thursday's preseason finale.
Sep 1 2010 - QB Ben Roethlisberger will remain in Pittsburgh working out with a quarterbacks coach while serving his four-game suspension to start the season. George Whitfield, from San Diego, has worked with Roethlisberger previously. Roethlisberger cannot be at the team's facility or attend games during his suspension and says he will watch closely on TV. "I will be so focused, taking mental reps on every single play."
Aug 29 2010 - QB Ben Roethlisberger could meet commission Roger Goodell in New York by the end of the coming week, according to a broadcast report by ESPN.
Roethlisberger faces a six-game suspension with a possible reduction to four games if he has made progress up to the standards set by Goodell at their first meeting. Roethlisberger was suspended after an investigation into his actions that led to accusation of sexual assualt in Georgia. While he was not charged, Roethlisberger was supended for violating the personal conduct policy.
Aug 26 2010 - QB Ben Roethlisberger will start Sunday's preseason game against the Broncos. Dennis Dixon, presumed the No. 3 starter when all three players (Byron Leftwich included) are available, will also get first-team reps.
Aug 15 2010 - QB Ben Roethlisberger is expected to play at the New York Giants on Saturday after not taking a snap in the team's preseason opener against Detroit last Saturday. "Ben is going to have opportunities to play in the preseason," coach Mike Tomlin said. "But with the number of snaps that we anticipated the offense running, it just wasn't appropriate to play him."
Jan 13 2010 - QB Ben Roethlisberger appeared to be favoring his right arm in the team's final game of the season at Miami but coach Mike Tomlin said it's nothing serious.
"No, I don't think that it is, but I don't have specific, detailed information regarding it," Tomlins said. "But I don't think it's anything that's going to require a medical procedure of any kind."
Dec 6 2009 - QB Ben Roethlisberger (concussion) will start Sunday, according to NFL Network's Steve Wyche.
Dec 3 2009 - QB Ben Roethlisberger (concussion) put in another full day of practice Thursday and vowed to play on Sunday against Oakland at home.
"I feel great. I'm ready to go, practiced yesterday, felt good, no headaches and ready to rock and roll."
Dec 2 2009 - QB Ben Roethlisberger went through a full practice Wednesday and should be fine to play after missing last week with post-concussion headaches.
