PLAYER NOTES:
Aug 31 2010 - WR Roy Williams sat out Tuesday's practice with back and hip issues. Williams was sidelined just as rookie first-round pick Dez Bryant (ankle) returned to practice.
May 28 2010 - WR Roy Williams admitted to Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole that his one-plus years in Dallas have so far been "a nightmare." Williams, pegged to be the team's No. 1 receiver, is now in a fight for a starting job with rookie Dez Bryant. "I'm not going to hide from it. I understand the business. I thought (coming home to Texas) was going to be a dream. It's been a nightmare," Williams told Cole.
May 20 2010 - WR Roy Williams was guaranteed a starting job in February by team owner Jerry Jones, and it was assumed that Williams was getting a free pass and wasn't being held accountable. At the time, Jones knew that Williams was getting beat up far and wide by fans and the media for a subpar season so he didn't need to beat him up anymore. He was trying to support him. Still, Jones rendered any questions of a free pass for Williams moot when he picked Dez Bryant in the first round of the NFL draft. If there were any concerns about Williams being properly motivated to get his act together, there are none now.
Williams said he is ready for any and all challenges.
"I'm in it to win it. If somebody can pull in here and take my spot, they've got to be a baaaad man," Williams said with emphasis. "It's mine to lose, I guess you can say. I'm not going to do that. The competition level is going to be high."
Williams backed up his words during the first week of OTAs. He is in great shape. He was making great coaches and showing an improved chemistry with quarterback Tony Romo.
"He is in good shape, he's running good routes, he's doing good things," Romo said.
Said cornerback Mike Jenkins: "Roy came out on fire. That's the best I've seen Roy since he got here. He looked like a No. 1 receiver. "
Dropped pass and a lack of production were part of Williams disappointing season last year. He understands why the fans are down on him. He has resolved to change that.
"I promise you I won't lead the league in drops. I know that," Williams said. "People are off my bandwagon, which I don't mind. I'd be off my bandwagon, too."
Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has certainly taken notice.
"His weight's really good, he looks quick and explosive, he's going to get the ball," Garrett said. "Like with everybody, it's a process that you're always trying to improve each and every day and it goes to your approach. And his approach has been outstanding."
Mar 4 2010 - WR Roy Williams is a problem for the fans and the media, but he is not a problem for the Cowboys despite his $45 million contract and minimal production. Owner Jerry Jones said he doesn't envision Williams not starting next season.
"No. No. A big no," Jones said. "I'm optimistic about Roy Williams. He's certainly got room for improvement. We all know that. But we've got to do some things with the way we get him the ball to enhance his game. We're going to do that."
Jan 20 2010 - WR Roy Williams was given a $9 million annual salary to replace Terrell Owens as the team's go-to receiver. Williams, however, didn't live up to expectations because of a litany of dropped passes and an inability to get on the same page as quarterback Tony Romo. Williams caught just 38 passes for 598 yards and seven touchdowns.
Aug 31 2010 - WR Roy Williams sat out Tuesday's practice with back and hip issues. Williams was sidelined just as rookie first-round pick Dez Bryant (ankle) returned to practice.
Oct 23 2009 - WR Roy Williams continues to be bothered by sore ribs. Williams expects to play Sunday, but coach Wade Philips said he is concerned. "The guy I'm worried about is Roy Williams," Phillips told ESPNDallas.com before the team's workout Friday. "He has practiced, but he is in pain sometimes. But he told me he wants to play and feels like he can play ... He says he wants to play and feels like he can. Of course, our doctors and trainers are looking at it, also."
Oct 22 2009 - WR Roy Williams has 30 catches for 412 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games since the trade last season. He has just 11 catches this season.
He is also returning from bruised ribs that kept him out of the Chiefs game before the bye. He is sore, but he is expected to play against the Falcons on Sunday.
Oct 14 2009 - WR Roy Williams did not practice on Wednesday, but his bruised ribs that held him out of the Chiefs game are getting healthy. He said he will be ready to go against the Falcons after the bye.
Oct 13 2009 - WR Roy Williams was a typical fan Sunday as he watched the Cowboys from the couch at home because of bruised ribs. He will be held out practice this week but should be ready to return to action following the bye.
